Thoughts While ShavingFundraisers for many groups/organizations that provide very valuable services to local residents are scheduled over the next few days and weeks, so many to keep up with. Check BladenOnline’s news, sports and events pages for those we are aware of.

The latest unemployment rate for the state is 4.5%. Buncombe County (Asheville) had the lowest rate in the state (3.4 %) and Hyde County (Swan Quarter) was the highest at 10.6%. The next county by county unemployment rate update is scheduled to be released Friday, March 16, 2018 (tomorrow). Bladen County’s rate is usually slightly higher than state average.

Anyone looking for a job should be able to find one and more jobs are coming to Bladen County including 200 to 300 at Smithfield Foods.

I admire folks who know how to repair anything.

March Madness is underway. North Carolina is well represented, by team and individuals.

High school spring sports are underway with baseball, softball, soccer, track & field and tennis, maybe more. Check our Sports Page for a daily line-up.

North Carolina Department of Transportation awarded a $13.2 million contract to Barnhill Construction of Rocky Mount January 2015 to upgrade the intersection at NC 87 and US 701 near Elizabethtown, NC. Just over 3 years later it appears the project is nearing completion. Traffic volume at the time the contract was awarded was about 14,000 vehicle per day. A traffic light at the intersection is a thing of the past.

Another ‘cold snap’ for berry farmers to be concerned about. Hopefully, no damage.

Clever thoughts:

Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.
