Thoughts While ShavingAnother successful Shriner’s Fish Fry yesterday.  Good food, nice weather and proceeds benefit Shriner’s hospitals providing medical care to youngsters, at not cost.

Bladen roads are more dangerous than ever.  4 traffic fatalities in the past 4 days.

Good to see an all-out-war on drug-use by numerous organizations.  Far too many are dying from drug overdose, more so among our younger residents.  One is too many.

Thanks for the nice comments on ‘Thoughts’.  Much appreciated.

The big sign is back out on West Broad Street, Elizabethtown reminding all of the Kids Appreciation Day sponsored annually by Elizabethtown Police Department.  It is a very popular event for youngsters.  You should see the excitement of a young boy or girl having the opportunity to sit in a police vehicle, or a fire truck and ‘talk business’ with a fireman or policeman.  More info coming.  Or you can just check the sign in front of City Hall.  Good PR.

On the national scene, lots of movement.  Yesterday, Republican Speaker Paul Ryan announced he is leaving Congress after 20 years, the last 3 1/2 years as Speaker.  He received heavy pressure to take the position in the later part of 2015 and my guess is, unless you are just a career politician, it wears heavy attempting to satisfy all, especially those in your own party.  Agree or disagree, he has provided good leadership and will be missed.  He has said he will return to Wisconsin to be more than a weekend dad to his family.  Liked one of his comments, may see it around for a while, “It works better to have private conversations than public dispute.”

No doubt, much behind the scenes maneuvering as congressmen (male or female) ‘jockey’ for his position.

Latest numbers I have seen is 55 house members not seeking re-election, 38 Republicans and 17 Democrats.  Two more, one from each party have already ‘jumped ship’, and more could add their names to the list.  13% of the full voting membership have or are planning on departing in January, 2019, if not before.  That is the largest number in the past quarter-century.  Some coming and some going, the ‘moving business’ will be good for a while in DC.

What I have observed is the attitude of far to many good common sense citizens is, I will follow (support) my President, Senator or Congressman regardless of their actions, come h— or high water, and that applies to supporters of both political parties.  rgh

There is more selfishness and less principle among members of Congress than I had any conception of, before I became President of the U.S.  James K. Polk

I have wondered at times what the Ten Commandments would have looked like if Moses had run them thru the US Congress.  Ronald Reagan
