Thoughts While Shaving
Spread the love

Been watching the NC State Board of Election hearings of possible illegal activities in Bladen and surrounding counties in the November, 2018 General Election.  Can’t help  but wonder how many other counties have problems that have not surfaced, maybe not to the extent of the local issues.  When we lose faith in the election process, we are in deep trouble, and that includes the gerrymandering issues at the state level. The election hearings continue today and there is some speculation they could continue through Thursday.  Hope they take all the time needed before the recently ‘seated’ state board of elections makes a final decision.

Changing my Thoughts this day, thinking of yesteryear….How about a Studebaker Golden Hawk auto, or a Hudson, an Allis Chalmer tractor, with the motor in the rear?  Remember them?  Maybe a driver smoking Chesterfield, Lucky Strike or Camel cigarettes…or roll your own with Prince Albert tobacco in a can.

In the 40s, 50s and into the 60s…there were tent revivals, remember?  A fire and brim-stone evangelist.  They would set up their tent on a vacant lot, unload a few folding chairs, preach a few nights…pass a collection plate…..and move on.  Now, hear comments like, too many churches, too few folks attending.  Can’t blame it on tent revivals…

Remember traveling carnivals?  A small ferris wheel, hobby horses, a couple of clowns, a fortuned teller, and shaved ice cones, you select the flavor?  Some had an elephant……Traveled in a couple of 18-wheelers and a few of small camper type house trailers.  They would moved in for few days, entertain.. and moved on.

The preachers and the carnival usually arrived shortly after the tobacco markets opened….

So much for yesteryear….
