Mackenzie Gore, former Whiteville Wolfpacker, finally got to pitch for the ‘big team.’ He was not the winner, but he was not the loser … the linescore 5.1 innings pitched against the Atlanta Braves. He allowed 2 earned runs, 3 hits, walked 2 and was trailing 2-0 when he was replaced in his major league debut … A long time coming. He threw 73 pitches, including 55 fastballs. The game was played in San Diego … He was signed by the Padres for a ‘ton’ of money and labled ‘can’t miss’ and ‘no trade’. He no doubt has earned another start, hopefully many more. He began the 2022 season in Triple A. The Padres-Braves game last night was closely followed by many baseball fans in eastern North Carolina, and they should be feeling good about Gore’s long-awaited major league debut.
A downer related to an Eastern NC athlete … William McGirt (Fairmont Golden Tornado) failed to make the cut at the RBC Heritage PGA event in South Carolina. He missed by a couple of strokes … McGirt has had major surgery on his hip, knee, not sure which, maybe both. He attributed his suffering to years as the catcher on his high school baseball team. He had won about $10 million on the PGA tour prior to his health issues. He has been on the sidelines for 2, maybe 3 years.
Today, millions of youth will likely be hunting Easter eggs, including hundreds in our area. Enjoy … and make plans to attend sunrise services early tomorrow and regular service, then enjoy the big noontime feast with family & friends…
