Bladen County leaders met recently to discuss long range plans … Best summary I have seen is in the ‘Border Belt Independent’, a regional news source that covers Bladen, Robeson and Scotland, if my memory is not playing tricks. It’s owned by former News Reporter owner/publisher Les High. He recently sold News Reporter in Whiteville. His family has been in the newspaper business for many years … Google for more info…

Interesting info … I thought back to my days as a County Commissioners, 1974-82 … I was a young man then … The courthouse housed the ASCS office on the 3rd floor, as well as the lone courtroom, the Bladen County Library was in the basement and many county offices between. The parking lot was too small, nearby shopping center owners were not happy that their parking lot was used by courthouse visitors … Farmers were not happy because it was not a convenient situation, as were library patrons … Health Department and Social Services were overcrowded … Sheriff’s office and jail were in the courthouse … school consolidation was a big issue statewide, including Bladen … and Bladen County Hospital needed more beds … and we, as well as other boards, dealt with it … one by one … over a period of years…

Difficult times and little money … took years. Just the facts…

New Ag Center, DSS facility, Health Department, high school (well one, then), new Library, expanded hospital and added beds, and more … and a consolidated solid waste site … Not all at one time, but it was a plan … eventually completed … including jail, many years later … Never ending … Long range planning is important … Congrats to all…

44 degrees at 5:30 a.m. Today’s weather forecast … Sunny, with a high near 68 … A slight chance of showers between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. tonight. Mostly cloudy, gradually becoming mostly clear with a low near 50. Sunday (church day), sunny with a high near 74 and windy, gusts as high as 17 mph.
