Thoughts While Shaving
Spread the love

The Easter season has arrived, a special time of the year for Christians … Churchgoers are likely to be in church tomorrow, even those who seldom go … Feel the need to hear the story again…

With that in mind, I have been doing some soul-searching … about how we use our time on earth for the betterment of mankind … So many have done so much to make our communities better … some through efforts of the church family, others in various, mostly volunteer organizations … Volunteers are still needed … Seems to me, some are busy, doing busy work, but not as much as in the past … ex., boys and girl scouts, 4H, civic clubs, little league, volunteers for rescue squads, firefighters, Get the picture?

I enjoyed my early years as a member of the Jaycees … today, no time for Jaycees, Rotary, Kiwanis, Optimist, and on and on … We have little or no experience working with others, so we elect good folks, but many who never had the opportunity to work with a group and too many decide it’s my way or no way … Not so in civic clubs, fire departments or rescue squads … 4-H, and on and on … we learned to serve as volunteers … learned to work together … for a common good…

Leads me to one more thought … Many civic groups I am aware of attempted to live by a creed … I was in the Jaycees in my younger days and I enjoyed reciting and thinking about the Creed … still do…

“We believe … That Faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of men transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life”…

Took a while for me to understand … and took a few years before females were welcomed … eventually they were…

I think of many who were great volunteers … today, there are still opportunities to serve … but the list is not as long as it has been … We are too busy. Lessons go unlearned…
