Thoughts While Shaving For August 2

Spread the love

Robert Hester, Founder of BladenOnline.comBack to school for some students, others begin later this month … I remember as a youngster all returned to school at the same time … Today, lots of options…

I remember returning to school around Labor Day … Hot weather and me in my new flannel shirt. We were sharecroppers mostly, but occasionally our dad would work at the cotton mill in Bladenboro, or help someone in the logging business or log for himself … Regardless of what he was doing, my brothers and I were busy, mostly helping folks “put in tobacco” or topping and suckering tobacco. We were, for the most part, paid in full after those we worked for, delivered their crop to the tobacco market. I remember helping one farmer throughout the season, when we “were paid” I received about $50 for a couple of days a week for the entire season … Helped another who paid in cash at the end of the day … I liked that…

Back to the summer long work, we bought our school clothes, mostly with our earnings. Mom made a shirt or two for us from bags of feed, hog and chicken feed … Pretty, but would begin fading after one washing … When I begin to follow the opening of school, I have a ‘flash back’ to yesteryear … One more thought, if we purchased a shirt, chances were good it was a flannel shirt and I was proud of my new store bought shirt and wanted to ‘show off’, so I wore it regardless of the temperature … 90 degrees and wearing a flannel shirt … I’m still a slow learner … precious memories … If you haven’t been there you do not understand…

Sorry, sometime a “flashback” is worth re-living…

One more thought, I’m still attempting to understand how one pilot fell from, or jumped from, a low-flying plane. He was killed, plane crash landed near or on RDU runway between Raleigh and Durham. The other occupant stayed with the plane and suffered some injuries, hopefully not life threatening … When i think of their options, I am happy I am not all that excited about flying…

Mostly sunny and hot today with a high near 98. Heat index as high as 104.
