Weather has improved … still wet in low lying areas and high temps in the upper 80s … Both welcomed improvements compared to recent times … No rain over past few hours, and yesterday’s high temp was 87 degrees … Flood warnings in the area around 7 p.m. today.
Sunny today with a high near 88. Mostly clear tonight, low around 67. Thursday, sunny with a high near 88. Same type forecast thru Saturday night … A 30% chance of rain daily beginning Sunday.

Columbus County’s Robert “Linwood” Hedgepeth has been inducted into the North Carolina High School Sports Hall of Fame at a recent gathering in Wake County. Linwood has been a very successful baseball coach at the high school level and as an American Legion coach … mostly in the Columbus County area, first at Hallsboro High School, later at Whiteville, high school and legion ball. His legion teams included several Bladen County locals. There was some question whether he would/could attend. He has been having some health issues … One of the best baseball coaches ever in the area for many years … Among his players were a few who made it to the big leagues … among them … Tommy Green, who pitched a no-hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies before retiring several years ago…
With some schools open for fall semester and others soon to do the same … I’ve been thinking about those types of days … long, long ago. Happy to get away from daily chores on the farm … but sitting in a hot classroom was not fun … and there was no air conditioning in the 50s and 60s … at best an oscillating fan, small fan for 20 to 25 students and the teacher.
Labor Day is fast approaching … then Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s … The older I get, the faster time flies by…
