Thoughts While Shaving
Spread the love

Thoughts While ShavingI am among men most richly blessed.

Early on this Sunday morning, I am in Winston Salem, a place I love to visit and have many fond memories in my 25 years as a member of the staff of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC).

After my retirement in 2007, I spent 100% of my time working to establish BladenOnline as a credible news source.  However, once a year, usually in August, I have been invited to attend the annual meeting of the Association where I enjoyed my time working for and with some of North Carolina’s finest, County Commissioners and staff, statewide as well as my fellow employees at NCACC.

I still enjoy every visit, despite the fact that many of my friends have stepped aside, some deceased, some probably rejected by voters.  Their staff has changed, but many that I knew and worked with are still on the job.  It is a real treat and I know I am blessed.

For the past nearly 10 years, I have traveled some, but not the usual 40,000 to 45,000 miles I was accustom to as the NCACC Field Rep.

On my way to Winston Salem, I was amazed at the new roads, bypasses and upgrades, in the Fort Bragg area, a bypass around Sanford and boo-kos of new constructions and upgrades in the Triad area.

Back to the meeting, guest included Gov. McCrory, Sen. Burr and others.

NCACC and perhaps the NC League of Municipalities, are the most cohesive group of elected officials anywhere around that I am aware of when it comes to working together.  Republicans, Democrats and Independents all working for a common cause, unlike Raleigh and Washington.

You may see a touch of politics in the election of officers, but the balance is constantly good.  A goodly number of both parties, blacks and whites, male and female from east, west and in between.

Once seated, they work together, using their strengths to reach out to state and national leaders.

They are not perfect, but no such fights that we see at the state and national level.  They can’t afford to not work together for school funding, for mental health and so many other important services for their constitutes.

OK, so I am a little biased, who isn’t?
