Thoughts While ShavingEveryone needs to go-away from home for a period of time so they can appreciate the return.

Attended a portion of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) in Forsyth County over the weekend.

One concern discussed briefly is the need for additional services for mental health in North Carolina and across the USA.  Jail space is being consumed by many who are addicted after being medicated for a physical problem.  The problem is real, but many think jails and hospital emergency rooms are not the place for those suffering individuals.  If not those two, where and how????  No easy answers.

We hear folks say, why don’t you have more good news?  We make an effort, but you know what draws the huge numbers?  Coverage of bad news, a wreck, a court-related article or some other what we could classify as “bad” news.

We have had a couple of recording breaking weeks, posting some of our best numbers ever, and the big numbers are mostly related to bad news.  The proof:

Last week, we posted our 2nd highest weekly pages viewed, ever.

For the record, our top 5:

January 3-9, 2016             177,077

*August 7-13, 2016           163,366

December 8-12, 2015       159,367

June 26 – July 2, 2016       158,742

*July 31 – August 6, 2016  158,584

Daily and weekly visits, basically the same pattern.

Our most read stories last week:

12,691:  One killed, one injured in head-on collision near Bladenboro.

12,128:  Tragic crash involving farm tractor and vehicle results in fatality.

Out of the top 15 articles read, 11 of 15 could be classified as “bad” news.

The top story that may not be related to bad news was ‘NCDPI recommends closure of three schools to Board of Education’.  6,420 read the article.  Depending on how you view that situation, some may re-classify.

So much for the numbers.  Thanks for your continued support and for the efforts of the staff, other supporters and our advertisers.  It takes a team effort, all working together 24/7 to cover local news.

Our sweet grand-daughter, Morgan Caroline Hester, enters ECU Dental School today.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
