Day 1 of temps above 90 degrees in late August is over … Yesterday’s (Monday) high temp … 90.3 degrees under clear skies…
The forecast for today (Tuesday), partly sunny, that gradually becomes sunny, with a high near 92. Wednesday, sunny with a high near 95 degrees … with heat index values as high as 100.
Thursday … High near 95 … Friday, a 30% chance of showers … High near 92 … Saturday … Mostly sunny, high near 92 … and 91 for Sunday…
A long distance look at Monday, Labor Day … High near 87 and a 40% chance of precipitation…
Remember barning tobacco … cropping by hand, stringing at the barn and hanging on tier poles 20 feet or more high? A tough way to make grocery money or to buy back-to-school wear … That was the way it was … years and years ago … Many old folks remember…
Then it was graded … a good leaf, a not so good leaf … one by one … tie in small bundles, place on a pole … maybe 5 or 6 feet long … and delivered to a nearby tobacco warehouse to see how good their crop was … Those were the days my friend, I thought it would never end … but it did … The whole process … Now machinery is used to harvest and growers contract for their product … Cut out several steps … Great Move … Not much golden leaf is grown now in our area … Tobacco was once KING for local farmers … their biggest money crop…
To put it all in perspective … How many folks do you know who smoke, chew, dip or use the product in any way? Very few … That’s GOOD. The medical folks say so…
Back to the weather … Not much talk about a hurricane in our area this year … And this is hurricane season … August thru October … Never say never … September 14, 2018 … Hurricane Florence began making landfall near Wrightsville Beach, NC as a category 1 storm … It can and has happened … No sign of one at this time this year…
So, how are you dealing with this heat? Tough … Thanks goodness for air conditioning and the folks that keep it operating as it should…
Plans for Labor Day? Maybe a few hours at one of Bladen’s lakes, a few days at the beach or in the mountains or some other vacation location? Hope the weather cooperates…
