Thoughts While Shaving
Spread the love

Thoughts While ShavingToday, I am sharing a poem written by Morgan Hester, our granddaughter (without her permission) who is a first year student in the ECU School of Dental Medicine, 2020.  She will forgive me for not getting her permission, I am sure.  She knows me and loves me.

Where I’m From

I am from freshly brewed morning coffee
From homemade cinnamon rolls and dessert for breakfast
I am from classic brick work and white columns
Traditional, a minute walk to downtown
I am from the blooming crepe myrtle tree, the budding rose bush
The latter from Great-Grandmother Rose’s garden

I’m from Christmas morning breakfast casserole and monkey bread
From grandparents Giga and DaDa, MomMom and Pappy
I’m from a history of hard work and dreamers
From two nurses, a teacher, a government worker, a politician, a farmer
From musicians, artists and churchgoers.

I’m from “Remember who you are and whose your are,”
And from “It is Well with my Soul.”
I’m from family roadtrips to Ocean Isle Beach
I’m from the small town of Smithfield,
from everyone knows everything
Fried chicken and barbeque, and bacon grease for added flavor
From pillow fights with brother,
Though small, I was feisty

Four generation family portraits
Hanging high on the wall
A tradition marked in the past, hopefully restored in the future
I am from these pictures-these memories-these people
From love, laughter and joy.
