Thoughts While ShavingIf you are one of those who seldom follow the stock market … you may not realize the huge increase over the past few months … What goes up can come down quickly … Yesterday was one of those down days … Many recent, or soon to be, retirees depend greatly on their 401K to supply their financial needs when they finally retire, in addition to social security … In fact, many companies no longer provide retirement, but do offer 401K, and match up to some level … Dow dropped yesterday from 35,560 to 35,223, minus 277…

Following the progress of some of the young folks playing professional sports…

Brandon Council, former West Bladen athlete, later played college football, graduated from Auburn U, now playing professionally for the Saskatchewan Roughriders pro football team … He was on the disabled list last week with an injury. He is back on the roster and slated to play in Sunday’s Canadian Football League game vs. the Ottawa Redbacks, 7 p.m. at their home stadium … Mosaic Stadium … both teams need a win … both 3-4 for the season. Council plays on the offensive line. Rosters for both teams include players from numerous NC area colleges and universities.

Former East Bladen and NCSU grad Larrell Murchison, now playing with the LA Rams … He plays on the defensive line, first with the Tennessee Titans … maybe 3 years, or so, and 3, maybe 4, games late last season with the Rams, made some good plays, impressing the Rams coaching staff … Looking forward to more NFL action…

Back home, East and West Bladen High School teams are preparing for the upcoming season, which will include scrimmage games with other schools in the area.

Columbus County’s current baseball major leaguer, MacKenzie Gore, turned in another very good outing last night. He pitched 6 strong innings … left the game trailing the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 … The Nationals scored twice in the 9th to win, 3-2. Gore gave up 2 runs, 3 hits, recorded 5 strikeouts and issued 2 base on balls … Stout performance … As one writer described a week or so ago … An ace in the making…

Students attending local private schools are back in school, public schools will begin later this month … One school seldom mentioned is the Paul Brown Academy … The students are back in school … over 180 strong, an increase of over 30 students … More later … They do good work…

Mostly sunny today, high near 87. A 30% chance of rain tonight … Mostly cloudy tonight, low near 70 degrees. Friday, a 70% chance of rain … Mostly cloudy, with a high near 81 and wind gusts as high as 18 mph. Same type forecast for Saturday and Sunday, except temps moving higher.

Lots of folks have lost family members … and many are dealing with serious medical issues … Keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers … Sometimes we forget…
