Recently, it seems a trip a day to a food store is necessary … And I have observed some of my senior friends obviously shopping for the holidays … Yep, at the grocery stores … Remember, as a youngster, among the most popular items from Santa or mom and dad would be a new homemade shirt from a feed bag … pretty bags, made nice looking shirts … a homemade baseball, made from twine used to hold tobacco on the stick when curing … But what I saw at the grocery store was … oranges, nuts, some apples, bags of hard candy, peppermint, suckers, etc., and English walnuts, or other such nuts … mostly folks my age with the goodies in their carts … I did not see tangerines … my guess is they were there, or will be soon … I bet other senior citizens remember … Christmas socks hanging from the mantle over the fireplace … #2 place to look after checking under the Christmas tree…
This is also college football bowl game time … Many have been played, and must be another 25 or 30 games between now and early next year or shortly after … Check ‘Couch Potato’ column … that also includes high school basketball this time of the year…
Duke and UNC basketball fans must be sweating the upcoming ACC basketball season … as well as the coaching staff of some … Several new coaches are feeling the heat of replacing coaches with long time winning records … and some others who haven’t been up to par in recent years…
