Bladen County Commissioners meet at 6:30 p.m. today. 5 newly elected commissioners will be seated … among the first items of business will be the election of a Chairman and Vice Chair.

I remember my first meeting, December 1974 … I was excited, a little concerned, 3 of 5 were newly elected. Edgar Stevens Jr. of the Carvers Creek community and Robert G. (Bobby) Roberts of the Dublin area were the holdovers. Stevens was elected chairman, Roberts, vice-chair and we were off and running. No manager at that time … Doug Evans Sr. was the Finance Officer, and in that capacity the person in charge of the day to day activities for Bladen County government. He was later named Administrator … Other newly elected commissioners included Vance Clark of Elizabethtown and William Butler of Bladenboro…

Board was later enlarged to 9, sometime in the late 80s or early 90s … after my 8 years on the board.

Late NFL game … KC Chiefs (11-1) defeated the Denver Broncos (4-8), 22-16. 2 games are on the schedule for today … Washington vs Steelers at 5 p.m. and Bills vs 49ers at 8:15 p.m. And, a Tuesday night game … Ravens vs Cowboys…

Weather forecast for today … Patchy fog early … otherwise, cloudy with a high near 52 … chance for the early rain is 60% … As of 5:30, less than a tenth of rain had been recorded at the Curtis Brown Airport near Elizabethtown…

Normal high temp for December, for our area, is 58, normal low 34 and the average monthly rainfall for this time of year is a little over 3 inches.

Coronavirus or not, Santa will most likely arrive on time … reindeers and all…

Still time for us to assist Debbie Heustess in making this a good Christmas for boys and girls throughout the area who may not have Christmas without some support. Debbie’s Elf Angels have been active for years … Donations may be mailed to Elf Angels, c/o Debbie Heustess, 10578 South College Street, Clarkton, NC 28433.
