Today, 13 years ago, BladenOnline was introduced, and it’s been an interesting ride … Thanks for your support. It was a dream of the late Michael (Mike) Simmons and myself. Unfortunately, Mike died before seeing our dream come true. I just about gave up, did put-off the project for about 4 months before deciding it was doable … Been a good ride … Oh yes, some bumps along the way … Sold to Charlotte and Daine Smith several years ago, but never stopped contributing. The Smiths’ have done a good job … It is a tough task, but the feedback has been positive. Thanks for your support … The Best is Yet to Come…

February 1 … still in the middle of winter. Average high temp in Bladen County for the month is 63 degrees compared with 54 in January … average low, 34 compared with 33 in January.

And speaking of weather, yesterday was a ‘stinker’. Today’s forecast is for a 40% chance of rain, high near 43 degrees … More of the same tonight, with a low near 33. Tuesday, partly cloudy, with a high near 45 and windy, gusts in the 23 mph range…

Bladen County Commissioners meet in regular session tonight, 6:30 p.m. in the courthouse … Agenda appears to be light … but never know … I recall meetings years ago … What appeared to be a routine session could be much different. A real learning process for a majority of newcomers, appears to be a quality group.

Recall as a youngster, February was normally cold. We farmed … did not have a tractor. We had a horse and a mule and if we didn’t begin preparation early for a new year, we could get behind quickly … Breaking land was a back-breaking chore … Two animals, a two horse turnplow and a big field … Planting time was still weeks away, the task ahead was difficult … But, we were ready to plant come spring time.

I appreciate the opportunity, but enjoyed as much of that as I could stand. Decided early, I had no desire to be a farmer … Many love it … and I am thankful for what they do.
