Thoughts While ShavingWeather could be the top story today. Rain and sleet are in the forecast, but with temps expected to be in the mid to upper 30s, don’t expect much accumulation, if any. Just need to be aware and cautious. The precipitation is expected during the daytime. Clouds should change to clear skies tonight.

The murder of Travion Smith in Raleigh is coming to a close, could end soon. Smith is charged with first degree murder in the death of Bladen native Melissa Huggins-Jones. Prosecutors are nearing the end of their process and according to news sources, the defense is not likely to call any witnesses. Huggins-Jones was killed in her Raleigh area apartment. One other has already plead guilty to avoid the death penalty. And, still another is charged in the case. The family of the deceased have reportedly been in the courtroom for the trial in Wake County. Can’t imagine having to go through such a process.

Had an email from a friend in Wilmington about an earlier comment on ‘Thoughts While Shaving’. Dan McLaurin, former White Oak High School student, former educator in the Bladen County School system and now a Wilmington resident, wrote, “I was there (at a Whiteville tobacco warehouse) showing my Hertford (cow) with a great ag teacher, Fulton Stokes, …..”

In 1952, the only thing I knew about White Oak was it was on the opposite side of Bladen County (from Bladenboro) and they played 6-man football, basketball and baseball and Dan McLaurin was one of their athletes. Dan continued, “If you’re like me, we had no inkling of how good those days were at the time, but memories surely are wonderful.” I agree.

He continued, “BladenOnline keeps me connected to the area where I was raised and lived until almost six years ago. Still miss White Oak and the county……..” Thanks Dan, The Best Is Yet To Come.

As a youngster, I had no idea so many changes were coming, some good, some not so good in every area of our lives. Who would have ever dreamed of a portable phone, only in a Dick Tracy comic strip…..

The 2015-16 high school basketball season is coming to a close. Been a great run for a select group of East Bladen girls, but win, lose or draw, all seniors at both high schools will hopefully look back at their sports careers as a great experience. Playoffs begin soon. Check our sports page for details as regular season comes to a close.

Wonder when the stock market will hit a bottom. Serious business.
