Thoughts While ShavingOur area of the state ‘dodged’ the latest winter storm. Folks in the northeastern part of the state had a combination of snow and ice.

Our high yesterday was 35 degrees, today should be near 40 with northwest wind from 10 to 20 mph.

Several events today:

A BBQ plate sale is planned today in the Tar Heel area to benefit Kenny Huggins, a 33 year member of the local fire department. He recently suffered burns in an accident in his home. Plates are $7 each and all proceeds benefit Huggins.

Park rangers at Jones Lake State Park will be exploring various snakes in this area and unique species found across the state. Interested participants should be at the Jones Lake Visitor Center at 10 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

In Bladenboro, the Mother County Genealogical Society meets at 2 p.m. at the Historical Building on South Main Street. Kelly Baldwin will present a history of Abbottsburg. Following the Civil War, Abbottsburg became the largest town in the county. Today’s meeting is from 2-4 p.m. and all are welcome.

Bladen County Commissioners meet Monday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.

Remember when there was a news worthy event or action that was reported several days later? No More. BladenOnline changed that several years ago. News, Bladen County news 24-7-365, the way local news should be reported. And our promise to you is, “THE BEST IS YET TO COME.” Bladen County news reported by Bladen County folks for Bladen County residents.

Today we see small buildings throughout the county, that years ago were where news was reported, sometimes with little evidence, but entertaining. A wood-fired, pot-bellied heater, a few straight-back chairs, some in disrepair, surrounded by cold soft drinks in chest type coolers, hoop cheese that was sold by the slice and gas pumps outside….gas pumps, at many locations had to be ‘pumped up’ before pumping into vehicles…..and news, news and more news….some with some ‘shred’ of accuracy. I remember, and enjoyed. Sadly, most of those building have been closed for years. If those old stores could talk…

Comments from yesteryear by distinguished speakers:

“He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire” Winston Churchill

“I didn’t attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.” Mark Twain

“He can compress the most words into the smallest idea of anyone I know” Abraham Lincoln

“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go. Oscar Wilde
