When was the last time you heard someone ask for a pack of cigarettes, or a plug of tobacco, or snuff? It happens, do hear folks requesting cigarettes … don’t remember the last time I heard someone asking for Prince Albert tobacco, Railroad Mills, Peach or some other brand of snuff … or Black Maria chewing tobacco…
How about pulling up to a country store and tell the attendant to ‘fill it up’ or you want $5 worth of gas … and you would get your windshield cleaned while the gas was being pumped.
Remember 5 & 10 cent stores … could get a small bag of assorted candy … Mary Janes, Kits or other brands of sweets, many for a penny each?
Recall when you carried your grocery list to a store and read from it while the clerk would retrieve the items and place on the counter or in a bag … no buggies, no need for them. Items were stacked to the ceiling, clerk would use a long pole with some type hook to retrieve, and many times put your items in a net-type bag or a paper bag? All before plastic bags … Actually, many would total your purchase on a brown paper bag … may use a small adding machine, may just add up with no assistance.
How ’bout the last time you heard of a preacher holding a tent revival, usually late summer or early fall … outside, no heat, no air conditioning, folding chairs … few, if any, complaints about the weather…
Many have no idea what I am talking about, But, if your 50, 60 or more years old … bet you recall…
One more … a circus or some other type entertainment came calling, usually in the fall of the year, ’bout the time you were selling tobacco, peanuts, cotton … etc.
Those were good days, tough times, but most were in the same situation … Just kinda caught up in the past … where common words used by most included, thank you, pardon me, bless you, etc.
Today’s forecast … 100% chance of rain, high near 42. Low tonight around 37 and 100% chance of rain … Rainfall totals expected in the 2 to 2 1/2 inch category … will vary from place to place … (Can’t get wetter, just deeper)…
