Thoughts While Shaving for February 27

Spread the love

Should re-name for today … Thoughts while lying in the bed, wide awake … that was after an unplanned early evening nap…

Actually, it was kinda fun … Ever heard of Capudine? I’ve mentioned it a time or two … It was medication for head colds, manufactured in Raleigh. Came in a dark brown bottle … mmm, about 3 inches tall, some with a small cork in the top … It must have been a favorite of one of my granddads, Grandpa Cain … He passed away at an early age, before I started school, I barely remember crowds gathering at the home of my uncle, where his body was on display … Older folks will know about those days…

When I googled the company, I discovered the bottle is worth just over $25, bet he bought many bottles for much less … It is now an antique … Wish I had saved them over the years … I gave away several … Folks who later farmed his place would turn them up in the fields, in a packhouse, all over the property … Doubt there are many, if any, remaining…

That was just one of my many thoughts, when I should have been sleeping…

Remember when someone in a mule and wagon or surry with a fish box on the back … and a place to store ice … came calling about once, maybe twice a week … said he had fresh fish, ice and vanilla wafers … My folks trusted him … sometimes the fish were fresh, they would purchase a ‘mess’ of fish, a 25 or 50 cent block of ice, and a box of vanilla wafers … store the ice in a hole in the ground complete with sawdust that supposedly slowed the melting process … cook the fish and mom would parcel out the wafers over a period of a few days … many times in exchange for good behavior…

We had little but love … but life was not so bad as I relive those days … Politics was not discussed, who cared, we were all strugglin’ to survive … Oh yes, later we had a refrigerator … if you failed to refill the ice trays there would be no ice at the next meal … Good Times … It was easy to love your neighbors … they were few and far between, just about the same living situation … all kinda hand to mouth … No radio, no TV and no newspaper…

We can’t go back … we would have nothing to gossip about…

Weather for today … Mostly sunny with a high near 78 and windy. Patchy fog tonight with a low around 58. Sunday’s forecast … A slight chance of rain, partly sunny, with a high near 80 and windy…
