Thoughts While ShavingThis ‘n that!

Remember when ladies had quilting parties. Had wooden frames as big as the quilt, spread out, usually in the largest room in the house. Sewing, treats and some gossip. End product was a ‘one of a kind’ quilt using remnants of all types of fabric.

There were also ‘barn raisings’ from time to time. Usually in the late fall or winter. Someone needed a new barn and they were too busy farming during spring and summer season. Invite all the neighbors, friends and family to participate during their ‘down time’.

Another tradition seldom observed today were ‘hog killings’. Again, several families comin’ together to kill hogs, usually in cold weather. Much of the pork was stored in a ‘smoke house’, included stuffed sausage, hams, shoulders and more

Remember making lye soap in a washpot? Not likely unless you are 50, 60, 70 years old or older.

Those were difficult days, but good times.

No government support, no telephone, no TV, no drugs, maybe a little ‘moonshine’ and neighbors helping neighbors.

A typical Father’s Day included a visit to grandpa’s house, sharing time with family. Some time on the front porch sharing conversation. The older folks had a chair or shared a swing, youngsters were busy playing hopscotch, shooting marbles and other such games.

Those days are gone, forever, but the memories linger for a lifetime

Life is an ordeal, albeit an exciting one, but I wouldn’t trade it for the good old days of poverty and obscurity. Jim Carrey

The good old days are now. Tom Clancy

The way prices are rising, the good old days are last week. Les Dawson
