Thoughts While ShavingWinter has arrived.  Low this AM near 20 and high today in the low 40s.  And cold weather is expected for several more days, but our chances of snow are slim.

There are many old wives’ tales and folk legends that claim you can tell how tough a winter it’s going to be by looking at certain signs:

Have you heard these?

When leaves fall late, winter will be severe.

Holly trees are full of bright red berries which mean a harsh winter is on the way.

Animals’ fur get thicker.

Early bird migration.

A warm November is the sign of a bad winter.

Thick shell on acorns.

Brighter foliage.

Spiders entering the house in great numbers.

The squirrel gathers nuts early to fortify against a hard winter.

Frequent halos or rings the sun or moon forecast numerous snow falls.

A few more,

Thunder in winter signals snow seven to 10 days later.

January is perhaps the most important month for long term forecasting since the first twelve days of January predict the coming weather for the next twelve months.

Bottom line for today, bundle up if you plan to be outside and if you have been praying for cold weather, your prayers have been answered.

If it’s zero degrees outside today and it’s suppose to be twice as cold tomorrow, how cold is it going to be?

It was so cold…we didn’t clean the house – we just defrosted it.  Anonymous

And how about this one to top the list:

It was so cold….we pulled everything out of the freezer and huddled inside to warm up!
