Thoughts While Shaving for July 1

We have reached the mid-year point for 2020 … July 1 … It’s been a different type year from any I have ever witnessed … due to COVID-19. Hopefully, the situation continues to improve…

For Star Telephone users, had a 5 hour outage yesterday afternoon and evening … no telephone and no Internet for those in the area of Happy Valley Road and NC 242. A private contractor working for another utility company had an accident, caused serious issues … but all is well now.

Back to the COVID-19 issue … guess I err on the side of caution … See some hustling around, in and out of various businesses and functions, no mask … wide open … others more cautious. … I tend to fall in the later category … Understand all, whatever ‘floats your boat’.

Traditionally, the week of July 4th has no doubt been one of the largest gatherings of the year at numerous resort areas, including White Lake. … This year is more challenging than previous. … Will be interested in size of crowd. … No fireworks this year…

Think many forget how the visitors to White Lake, Jones Lake and other such locations affect our area. … If you check the latest Bladen County budget, on the revenue side, sales tax is a big number and less White Lake visitors, less shoppers, less revenues … same for area businesses…

And, speaking of the Elizabethtown Sidewalk Sale … ‘on go’ as usual … Bargains galore…

Weather forecast today … A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 89. … Light and variable wind and a 20% chance of precipitation.

“We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it.” William Faulkner

“Where liberty dwells, there is my country.” Benjamin Franklin

“America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination.” Harry S. Truman
