On a day like today, years and years ago … many farmer friends could be found sitting around a wood fired pot-belly stove sharing wisdom at the local country store … waiting for warmer weather so they could ‘break ground’ and get ready for planting season … Early arrivals were seated in hard slat-bottom chairs, late comers likely on a Pepsi, Coke or RC bottle crate … remember those, wooden crates that held 20 or 24 soft drinks, and all sizes of males … Not sure anyone even uses them anymore … sharing tall tales about most anything … much of what we have today is in a tin can or a plastic bottle … did see one of the brands recently in a glass bottle. Those were good days … Pack of cigarettes, most any brand … Camels, Kool, Chesterfield, Lucky Strike or a tin can with Prince Albert tobacco, could chew or smoke ’em … Think that’s what is wrong today … No place for real experts to share wisdom…
Days like today would be a good hog killin’ day … Remember? Huge fire and hog hanging by back legs on a homemade wooden device … Have hog head cheese or chitlins for supper … Hang the hams and shoulders in the ‘smoke house’ and pray for the best…
No place today for the real experts to discuss or solve the problems of the community, county, state, nation … or world…
