Thought back to a time when gasoline was in short supply, in fact a few times, but most memorable, for me, was when Jimmy Carter was president … fuel was scarce, lines were long, prices were crazy high … Another was during the President Richard Nixon term of office … 1973. “Arab oil exporters imposed an embargo on the United States and many of its allies in retaliation for American support of the Yom Kippur War.” That was 1973. “Then Jimmy Carter ran for office promising honesty and an end to the oil crisis and it was worse” according to one newspaper account…
One letter from a Maryland resident to the Post’s editor in 1979 said the long lines and low tanks “may turn out to be a good thing. Perhaps during this crisis, we will all be forced to stay closer to home and get to know our family and friends better” he wrote. “Perhaps it is an opportunity for neighbors to become communities once again. If this happens, then indeed the gas shortage will be a blessing.”
And in the 70s, some autos averaged as low as about 12 miles per gallon…
Hopefully, the present shortage will soon come to an end, then all will return to normal.
Picked up a few twigs from the big tree in our yard yesterday … by dark could not tell I had ever made an attempt to clean up…
Sunny today, with a high near 75, a calm northeast wind in the 5 to 9 mph range. Clear tonight, with a low around 47. Sunny Saturday, with a high near 78.
