Thoughts While Shaving
Spread the love

Friends ask me if I had no thoughts yesterday, maybe given up on shaving? Nope, used all my skills, produced what I thought was a good article … pressed send and apparently nothing happened … Attempted to send all day long, even last night … but no go … So will deal with yesterday’s thoughts at a later date…

Wish I understood technology … but I do not…

Read a couple of items on BladenOnline that I enjoyed … First was Jefferson Weaver’s letter to his deceased dad … typical Jefferson, great article … and the second was the article on the Bladen County Commissioners budget workshop … brought back so many memories … Back then a limited amount of money, a ton of needs and wants … I remember 1975 … my first budget workshop as a county commissioner … Initial thought was … what in the crap have I got myself into? … and there were three of five commissioners just elected for the first time … How many remember, Vance Clark, William Butler and yours truly? … Incumbents included Robert G. (Bobby) Roberts and C. E. (Edgar) Stevens, Jr., our Chairman … Doug Evans was finance officer and in that position, acting County Manager … It was a learning process for all, three brand new commissioners with no experience and the two incumbents…

It was a wonderful experience, as I look back … and the incumbents and manager were so helpful … Differences, yes a few, but in the end we relied on those who had faced the budget process before…

Early on as a commissioner, we, commissioners, Doug and Tax Collector, decided that a computer was needed, frankly, I did not understand why a computer … but I soon learned … Had 3 or 4 vendors pitching their brand, none we know today … No Apple, or whatever the other brands are … It would only serve the tax office … about the size of a ‘casket’…

To make a long story short, best experience of my life … learned a lot about county government, about the public who were not bashful about pointing out our shortcomings, and there many … Every department with more needs than money and it was our job to sort it all out and hopefully not raise taxes … More later…

Shriners Fish Fry appeared to be a huge success … great response, folks ready to get out and move around and fish ranks high on our most wanted food list … And, proceeds go to help crippled children…

Weather forecast … Partly sunny and cooler … high today near 76 and windy. A slight chance of showers (20%) after 10 p.m. tonight with a low around 53 … Friday, ’bout the same as today but a couple of degrees cooler … High near 74 and windy.

Thanks for all who ask why no ‘Thoughts” yesterday … I ‘messed up’, still no idea what caused my technical issues…

“In Star Wars anyone can hop in any spaceship and knows how to fly it. I just spent 20 minutes trying to find the headlights in a rental car.”

“I have a birdhouse in my backyard. Does that count as a twitter feed?”

“I thought growing old would take longer.”
