Thoughts While ShavingAfter ascending to the throne last year, King Charles III was crowned as Great Britain’s new Monarch as of about 3 a.m. (our time) this day. Live broadcast to the US, courtesy of PBS and other U.S. sources, providing coverage. Now 74, King Charles had the solid gold St. Edward crown placed on his head for the first official time. Charles was 4 years old when his mother, Queen Elizabeth, was crowned seven decades ago. Long Live The King.

Mostly cloudy today in Bladen County, with a high near 80. Partly cloudy tonight, with a low around 58. Sunday, a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms (20% chance) after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 82 and a light southwest wind, at times gusting to near 17 mph.

Think I have a red bug. Red spot, itching, and it’s that time of the year. Worked outside a couple of days ago, mowing grass and weeds, and a little clean-up … Brings back memories from long, long ago.

Years and years ago, I would go fishing, sometimes setting trotlines with a couple of friends at June Singletary millpond north of Bladenboro. It was mostly fun … no repellant, no nothing just me, cane pole, some twine and worms and ticks and red bugs … having a good time…

We worked hard as a family … sharecroppers, doing what sharecroppers do.

I also remember some of our games … baseball, playing on Sunday afternoon, with a homemade ball and bat. usually, only 4 or 5 on a team … All the players we had … I wanted to be like Mickey Mantle, later Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron, Milwaukee Braves (eventually Atlanta Braves) … Playing in bib overalls, sometimes cut-off blue jeans and occasionally would have a worn out glove someone gave us … Not all had a glove … We took turns playing with it … limited supply and, oh yes, mostly all barefooted…

When mom wanted the yard cleaned, we swept it … no turf, just a sandy yard … we could tell if we had company while we were away … mostly church … We could see their tracks … That was about the same time I was introduced to red bugs and ticks … The only responsibility we had was what our parents told us to do … and best we do it.

Not a care in the world … just scratching red bugs and ticks … and dreaming…

“Dream big, it’s the first step to success, making goals come second.”

“Always dare to dream. For as long as there’s a dream, there is hope and as long as there is hope, there is joying in living.”

“Today’s realities are yesterday’s dreams come true.”
