Above normal temps for the next few days with rain in the forecast. Today (Monday), high temps in the mid 70s and a 40% chance of rain. New rain totals less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

About the same thru Wednesday, cooler on Thursday and even cooler Friday when our high is expected to be near 50 and low in the low 40s.

Sunrise this morning 7:31 AM and sunset 5:24 PM.

Remember the old country stores all over the county where most of the problems were solved daily? Now, all that remains, for the most part, are dilapidated buildings. Can just hear the conversation … would likely be about the weather, the upcoming election and taxes.

Remember the old gas pumps, the casket size soft drink box full of Pepsi, Coke, RC Cola, Tru ads (?) (grape and orange), 7 Ups and more? … Hoop cheese that could be sliced in the 10, 20, or 25 cent size complete with johnny cake cookies, or a Moon Pie. … Candy included Kits and Mary Janes … and more. … All just a fading memory…

A dollar’s worth of gas would last several days…

I enjoyed listening … just a youngster, actually gained about as much knowledge at the country store as I did at school … after all, I was listening to the experts … and even more so ’round election time…

My favorite place was Uncle Fred Hester’s store, across the street from Zion Hill Baptist Church, 2 or 3 miles north of Bladenboro. Today, the former ‘knowledge shops’ dot the landscape … would be hard pressed to locate one still be operated. … They served a useful purpose … before the days of TV…

It was at those type places that I learned. … That money doesn’t buy class…

That under everyone’s hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved…

That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.
