One of the best, if not the all-time best high school pitchers in my lifetime will be buried today. Charles Victor Davis, best known in this area as Vic Davis, grew up in Bladenboro, graduated from Bladenboro High School and signed by the New York (now San Francisco) Giants as a right-handed pitcher, spent 10 years in the minor leagues plus a short time with the Giants. He was inducted into the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not for striking out 26 in an 11-inning game. He struck out Willie Mays with only three pitches in spring training. Later returned home and played for a short time with the Bladenboro Spinners. He was a few years older than me, but we were both in the same PE class and I was told to ‘catch’ him while he was working on a ‘knuckle-ball.’… Needless to say I was not a good athlete. He would throw the pitch, I missed most but a nearby ditch saved me. I would go in the ditch, retrieve the ball, toss it back and repeat, over and over again.

Vic was a better person than a baseball pitcher, maybe I can share more about a personal situation we had in our family and how he assisted. Lived most of his adult life in Cary. Married locally, has family still in the area. He retired from Xerox Corporation. Check our obit page for more. … Visitation is 11 a.m. today (Friday) at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, following by funeral service at noon and burial to follow. Still has family in the area.

November 1, 2019, can you believe???

Change your clocks before bedtime Saturday. Fall back.

Municipal elections Tuesday.

Ever have an unwanted program ‘gum up’ your computer? Can’t remove it … kinda like stepping on a fresh ‘wad’ of bubble gum on a cement walk-way. Nearly impossible to remove. Spent last night removing the ‘gunk’.
