Dr. Robert Taylor is leaving Bladen County, headed to Raleigh to become Deputy State Superintendent at the NC Department of Public Instruction. He joins the staff of Catherine Truitt, recently elected State School Superintendent. Dr. Taylor has been Superintendent of Bladen County Schools for the past 10 years or so … came to Bladen from the Clinton City School system. We thank him for his service and wish him the best. The local Board of Education named Dr. Jason Atkinson as interim. The move is effective between Dec. 31, 2020 and January 15, 2021. He currently serves as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the local school system.

Thanksgiving is less than a week away. No doubt, COVID-19 will change some long time habits … like the feast on Thanksgiving Day. Be cautious…

Speaking of a Thanksgiving Day, I recall my early days, first 18 years or so near Zion Hill Baptist Church, north of Bladenboro. Thanksgiving was a big deal. Church, family get-together … Mom would prepare a turkey, sometimes it was a chicken, homemade dressing, used veggies she had canned earlier, homemade biscuits from Famo or Shawnee flour, sweet Lipton tea, pumpkin or sweet potato pie … mmmm good. And we spent time with grandparents, uncle, aunts and cousins. Most lived just a few miles apart. Sometimes we traveled in a mule and wagon, sometimes in a vehicle … think the mule and wagon was more dependable, but the vehicle was warmer … Days I will never forget…
