As I grow older … I often think of holidays from long, long ago … (I know … here he goes again) … Well, they were different … In my early days we all loaded up in a mule and wagon and off to granny’s house … Uncle and Aunts and grandma and grandpa and cousins, all there … Play hard early … eat lunch, a great lunch … sometimes prepared by the females after we arrived, but more often, everyone would bring food … great food, lots of food, pots of food … turkey, ham and all that goes with it … and cakes and pies … Can see it now…
My granddaddy Hester was a good man, a praying man … After he prayed it was a sight-to-behold … Moms helping youngsters “fix” their plates … I miss the family, the food, everything…and everybody…All the older folks deceased … but I can nearly see them … Wish all could have been there, just one time…
There were no paper plates … no, no … everyone had a plate, a real plate…
Today … not bad … too many times we just go thru the motion … Gotta get back to work tomorrow … not bad, just different…
Sometimes we visited lower Bladen, our other sets of kin were in that area … Same good food … but a long ride over a beaten up road system … Roadways 41 and 53 were unpaved and a few drops of rain could cause issues … Still good … just different folks and a longer ride … and an old jalopy for transportation … too far for a mule and wagon…
Sorry … just sharing…
