East Bladen High school football team travels to South Columbus Friday, game time 7:30 p.m., 3rd round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs. About 40 minutes south of Elizabethtown on US 701.
Best show in this town may be Monday evening, at the Bladen County Board of Commissioners meeting in the courthouse beginning at 6:30 PM. 4 current members will approve the minutes of the last meeting and attend a reception in their honor before giving up their seats. Then new members will be sworn in and elect their new leaders. Departing members include Billy Ray Pait (R), Dr. Delilah Blanks (D), Jimmy Smith (D) and Wayne Edge (D). Pait and Blanks did not seek re-election. Smith and Edge were defeated.

The new board will consist of 6 D’s and 3 R’s but keep hearing one D may switch parties, would still need one more to totally change the direction of the board. Could be an interesting show. The election of chairman and vice chairman could indicate much about possible alliances.
It’s interesting that out of over 22,000 votes in Bladen and only a little of 3,000 are registered Republicans, compared with over 13,500 Democrats, the real power may be in the hands of the over 5,500 unaffiliated voters.
And speaking of elections, need to get past election of a governor. Count the votes and declare the winner. A reminder, the sitting governor appoints every member of the State Board of Elections and that board, in cooperation with the Governor, appoints every local board member in the state, and every local board in the state must include 2 members of the party of the sitting governor and one member of the minority party.
