Recently, there was recognition of the STS 66 mission to outer space, actually the 25th anniversary. One on board was Curt Brown Jr. of Elizabethtown, N.C. That was one of a half dozen or so that Brown was onboard. The STS 66 mission conducted several studies on the sun’s energy and how it affects the earth’s climate and environment. Curt logged a total of 1,383 hours in outer space in the ’90s. Curt returned to Bladen County for years promoting education and awarding a scholarship to students.

Thinking about Curt and his family. His dad owned and operated Western Auto Store for years in downtown Elizabethtown. … Western Auto went the way of Kmart and so many other retail chains…

Basketball is moving to the forefront at the high school and college level. NBA must play year round.

A special event at 5 p.m. today at the county recreation site near the NC Patrol station on US 701. A road into the county recreation site will be named in honor of Robert Mazur. Robert retired over the past year or so, maybe longer. He was in charge of many projects for the county, including constant upgrades at the park. Very deserving…

Bladen County Commissioners meeting at 6:30 p.m. today. It is open to the public…

Weather is great … for this time of year. Today’s forecast … Increasing clouds, high mid 60s. Tonight, a slight chance of rain, low in low 50s. Tuesday’s forecast … a slight chance of showers, mostly cloudy, low in the low 50s. A little of what you hoped for in July and August when it was so hot.

Municipal elections tomorrow (Tuesday).
