Congratulations to Mac Campbell Jr., recipient of UNCP Distinguished Service Award recently. Mac has been a huge supporter of the university for many years, and currently serves on many local boards and commissions, including Bladen We Care Foundation, Bladen Agri-Industrial and Elizabethtown Airport Board.
Saw an interesting headline recently…”How much $100 is really worth in each state”. It was related to retirees seeking a place to settle down and s-t-r-e-t-c-h their retirement dollars. North Carolina was ranked #18 out of 50 … $100 was worth $109.53 in the Tar Heel state. Mississippi was ranked #1 at $116.69, followed by Arkansas, Alabama, West Virginia and Kentucky. On the other end of the scale, $100 in Hawaii is worth $84.39, according to this release. Others with less buying power … New York, California, New Jersey and Maryland … Tennessee was ranked #16, South Carolina #17 and Virginia #39.
Remember when box trucks traveled throughout the area delivering Jack’s Cookies, Wise Potato Chips, Little Debbie sweets to large and small retail outlets … countywide … and there were more … but no more … Paul Sessom’s Wholesale delivered everywhere. Today, chain stores receive all from one 18-wheeler.
How about milk delivered house to house? Common practice in the 50s and 60s.
And going back to the 40s and 50s … how ’bout folks selling fish, ice and vanilla wafers from a horse or mule drawn wagon?
Oh, well … can’t imagine what it will be like in another 10 to 20 years … drones may do it all.
