Rainfall over the past week measured just less than 5 inches at the Hester household. … My earlier estimates were slightly higher.

Brian Free and Assurance will highlight a gospel concert September 28 at Elizabethtown Middle School. Special guest includes The Lumber River Quartet, and introducing Cedron’s Bridge. Admission varies depending on seating. Proceeds will benefit Southeastern Carolina Crossroads, the re-hab center for men suffering from drug and alcohol issues. Donations are also welcomed. SE Carolina Crossroads does great work, with volunteer financial support. A worthy cause and some great southern gospel singing. All are invited.

Triathlon scheduled for White Lake this weekend has been postponed.

Early voting in the 9th Congressional Special Election is continuing today in Tar Heel and Elizabethtown. The election is set for Tuesday, September 10 … the longest running campaign in recent memory.

Remember when there were 5 or 6 active civic organizations, around? One or two … maybe remain.

I think often about pullin’ into a Bladen County mom and pop jotem-down store for gas and a Pepsi. Your gas was pumped mostly by the owner-operator and your windshield washed while your gas was being pumped, and the soft drink was cold … cold … cold.

Remember when just about everyone had a smoke house where you hung your pork hams, shoulders and homemade sausage and liver puddin’?

Red Flyer wagons for youngsters … you ‘picked off’ horn worms and bud worms in the tobacco patch and pulled, shook and stacked peanuts!
