Brown’s Creek Bike Park and Nature Trail will be the host site for the first North Carolina Interscholastic Cycling League (NCICL) Youth Mountain Bike Race this season. Last year the event brought thousands of people to Elizabethtown according to officials and is expected to bring thousands more to the area this weekend.

In 2018, Mike Long with the NCICL said, “You (Elizabethtown) have just hosted the largest youth bike race in the history of the state,” after the league hosted a mountain bike event with 333 entries among 37 teams with an estimated 800 people in attendance. The NCICL is gearing up to hit record numbers again this year.

Cape Fear Fins Composite Mountain Bike Team announced they will be hosting a food drive with NCICL to benefit the Bladen Crisis Assistance Food Pantry at the first 2020 NICA race this weekend.

The Elizabethtown-White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce listed four ways local businesses can welcome the crowd to the area in the chamber’s weekly update.

Tips to welcome the visitors to the area are below.

  1. Put signs or banners up at your location or business.
  2. Provide a discount for the mountain bikers and their fans. Coupons and flyers may be dropped off at the Chamber office by 4 p.m. on Friday for distribution at the race.
  3. Talk with the tourists in town. Friendly faces make for good impressions.
  4. Attend the event and cheer on the racers.

There will be race signs at the park leading to the start/finish line. Saturday is a practice day and the races start at 9 a.m. on Sunday, according to the chamber’s update.

Cape Fear SORBA members and local volunteers have been working at the local park to extend trails and add features for mountain bike enthusists. In February the park gave kudos on social media to those helping add a double, a table top and the start of a gap jump across the creek. Visitors are asked to respect the trail closures.
