This weekend was special for some young men in Bladen County. John Dean Alsup IV, Jackson Davis Burney, and Andrew Nathaniel Shepherd were inducted into the Boy Scout’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Saturday at the Elizabethtown Baptist Church.

The Master of Ceremonies, Dan Allen said, “This is a great accomplishment and worthy of this celebration.”

Boy Scout Troop 600 lead in the presentation of colors, Pledge of Allegiance, Scouting’s Great Duties and the Scout Oath.

Eagle Scout, Greg Conner said, “It’s a lot more complicated than what most people think.”

Conner with the help from Troop 600 named and described the duties of each rank leading up to the Eagle Scout. Tenderfoot, Second, First, Star, and Life are the ranks a Boy Scout most rise through to achieve the honor of Eagle Scout.

Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent are all qualities a Boy Scout should possess according to their law. According to many in attendance Alsup, Burney and Shepherd exemplify these qualities in their own ways.

There are 2.25 million Eagle Scouts and less than 2% of the boys that join the scouts ever reach the high achievement of Eagle Scout according to Conner.

“These guys worked hard,” Mark Gillespie, Scoutmaster of Troop 600 said.

“They went through the ranks and they have become leaders. They embody what scouting is all about.” Gillespie continued.

“From this day on you will always be an Eagle Scout. Live and serve so those around you will be inspired.” Dr. David Elks, Eagle said.

The three scouts were honored from elected officials in Raleigh and Washington.

Senator Tom Tillis and Congressman David Rouzer sent their congratulations to the Trio. A flag flown over the capital in Washington D.C. on February 9th, was presented for the three earning the achievement of Eagle Scout.

Representative William Brisson said, “It is a honor for me to be here with you today and I want to congratulate you on your achievement and the hard work that you do.”

Howell Clark, Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 600 then announced the three as Eagle Scouts and invited everyone to join the Eagle Scouts and their families in a reception.
