A trio of Bladenboro natives and West Bladen grads who are also softball teammates at Southeastern Community College received awards at the 2015 Region X DII Banquet in Burlington that was held prior to the Region X Softball Tournament.

Abbey Walters was named the Region X Player of the Year and was also selected to the All-Region First Team Infield and as an All-Region First Team Pitcher.

Walters and teammate Kaitlyn Sykes were both chosen to the All-Academic Team. Teammate Robin Coleman was named to the All-Region Second Team as a Pitcher.

Walters slugged 9 home runs and drove in 39 runs in the regular season. Both of those marks placed her fourth in the region. The pitcher/shortstop batted .424 which was seventh-best in the region and was eighth in stolen bases with 15.

As a pitcher Walters recorded the second-best Earned Run Average in the Region of 1.56. The hard-throwing right-hander posted an 8-3 record with 7 complete games and one save while striking out 82 batters in 90 innings.

Coleman struck out 36 batters in 65 innings, won 4 games and compiled a 4.09 ERA. At the plate Coleman, a pitcher/outfielder, batted .375 with a home run and 15 rbi’s.

Sykes handled the catcher’s duties for the Lady Rams and had 119 put-outs, 10 assists and a .992 fielding percentage.

When the tournament began on Saturday, the Lady Rams won their opener over Patrick Henry Community College, but dropped their second game to Surry Community. Southeastern defeated Wake Tech and beat Patrick Henry again late Saturday night.

Southeastern gave up an unearned run in the first inning in their first game on Sunday to regular-season champion Richard Bland and that run stood up as Bland eliminated the Lady Rams 1-0.

Southeastern finished in third place in the tournament, and Walters was named to the All-Tournament Team.
