FAYETTEVILLE – Replacing a 44-year-old bridge will require Maxwell Road near the Cumberland-Sampson County border to close beginning Monday, Aug. 21.
It is one of three bridges over the South River at the county line east of Fayetteville that will be replaced under a $2.7 million contract awarded to Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy.
The other two bridges are on Faircloth Bridge Road near the Cumberland-Sampson County line. The two were built in 1965 and have vehicle weight restrictions.
Although safe for traffic, the three bridges are functionally obsolete and structurally deficient because of their aging components and high maintenance costs.
Work on the Maxwell Road bridge will cause a detour onto Jack Page, Faircloth Bridge, South River and Halltown roads. When finished, the contractor will proceed to replacing the other two bridges. The contractor has until November 2018 to complete all work.
