Senator_Thom_Tillis_Official_PortraitWASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement on his support for the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act and “Kate’s Law”:

“It is inconceivable that cities across the United States, including in North Carolina, blatantly ignore federal immigration laws and harbor dangerous criminals who are here illegally. We have an obligation to enforce the law and prevent tragic incidents like what happened to Kate Steinle from occurring in the future. I supported the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act and “Kate’s Law” because it would have cracked down on violent criminals here illegally, deterred dangerous illegal immigrants from reentering the country after being deported, and kept Americans safe.”

Senate Democrats voted to block both pieces of legislation from proceeding. The Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act would prohibit a sanctuary jurisdiction from receiving grants under certain Economic Development Assistance Programs and the Community Development Block Grant Program. “Kate’s Law,” named after Kate Steinle who was killed in San Francisco by an illegal immigrant who had previously been convicted of seven felonies and deported five times, provides a five-year mandatory minimum sentence for any illegal immigrant who re-enters the United States after having been convicted of an aggravated felony or after having been twice convicted of illegally re-entering the United States.
