fastnacht-day-2Today is national Fasnacht Day. It is a Pennsylvania Dutch celebration that occurs on Shrove Tuesday.

The Fasnacht is served traditionally during the Carnival or Fastnacht the day before Lent starts. The Fastnachts are a fried donut that was traditionally made with lard, sugar and butter, which were considered items that one fasted from during the Lent season. The Fastnachts are usually coated in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar and may be plain or filled with jelly or jam.
