As we prepare to welcome in the year 2018, we wanted to pause and reflect on the year 2017. It was a year of triumphs, tragedy, and new beginnings.

Below are the top ten news stories our readers found to be most interesting.

Our number one news story for 2017 reported on the closure of an iconic restaurant in our county. One of Bladen’s most popular restaurants closed until further notice.

No. 2. Clarkton house fire claims life of one. This story told of a tragic loss suffered by one Bladen County family.

No. 3. Fake news about White Lake, NC. The internet has been awash in fake news reports involving everything from misdeeds of government officials to those making false reports about skin ailments contracted at White Lake.

No. 4. Bladen talent assists in laying to rest two children. Bladen County boasts many talented artists. One Bladen County artisan used his talents to try to help ease one family’s pain.

No. 5. Nightclub and bar in town. The town of Elizabethtown approved the permit for a new business.

No. 6. Bladen County athletes playing in college. Many of our talented high school athletes have gone on to share their talents on college teams. BladenOnline.com has created a page to help you keep up with their collegiate triumphs.

No. 7. First Responder Spotlight – Bladen Sheriff’s Deputy Hakeem Brown (Feb 2015). Many of you have continued to enjoy reading our series on our First Responders from 2015.

No. 9. Home could soon face demolition. A once grand Bladen County home is facing the wrecking ball.

No. 10. Preparing to enjoy retirement, saying farewell to staff and friends. A Bladen County dentist said farewell to his friends and co-workers as he prepared to enjoy retirement.
