The Bladenboro Town Commissioners met on Monday night and voted to approve an amendment to the town ordinances regarding the fire department to add a subsection addressing hazardous substance abatement.

Fire Chief Jackie Coleman said the additional subsection is to allow the fire department to be reimbursed for their services.

The board conducted a public hearing regarding the matter during which no one spoke. Later the board voted unanimously to approve the change.

In other business, the board reviewed the bids for the scope of work to preserve the Depot building.

Town Administrator John O’Daniel said the building’s shingles are past their life span.

He also told the board the current tenant has experienced leaks and some of the wood around the edge of  the roof is starting to rot.

According to O’Daniel the building also has asbestos siding. He told the board they have a choice to either have the asbestos siding abated and go to vinyl siding  or paint over the current siding to preserve it.

“We all know if you let a building go, it will fall down. It has been let go for the sake of other projects,” said Councilman Gene Norton.

After further discussion on the matter, the board voted to award the bid for the roof repair to Treadlight of Fayetteville and to award the bid for the vinyl siding work to Paits.

The board then had to decide which company to award the bid for the asbestos abatement. The board voted to award the contract for the asbestos abatement to CCI.

councilman Jeff Atkinson pointed out that Pait bid did not mention a warranty on their work. Town Clerk Melanie Hester told the board they can withhold a certain amount of money for a specified period of time to ensure the board is satisfied with the work.
