The Elizabethtown Police Department and the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office were manning a traffic check point at East Broad and DeWitt Streets when a vehicle refused to stop for the check point when instructed to do so by Elizabethtown Police Officer Joe Butler. The stop was conducted at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers stopped the vehicle and they approached it, they could smell marijuana, said Lt. McMichael of the Elizabethtown Police Department. He said the occupants of the car told officers they had been smoking marijuana earlier.

“When officers got them out of the car, they found two loaded handguns under the seats,” said Lt. McMichael.

He said both occupants of the car, Cedric Burnett and Diquelle Sweet, both of Wilmington, were found to be convicted felons. Both Burnett and Sweet were arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
