For some students, finding a clear path to a successful career can be challenging.

But for Noah Wiliams, the combination of hands-on and classroom learning through the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Summer Accelerator program provided the early exposure needed to spark a passion for transportation.

This two-week summer course aims to help prepare high school students for transportation construction industry careers.

Staff in NCDOT’s On-the-Job Training Program partner with school districts to enhance existing construction programs without adding burdens to staff.

William’s passion for transportation work in his community helped him land an internship with NCDOT in 2024. Today, he is busy repairing state roads and bridges in the area where he grew up, working full time as a transportation worker in the agency’s Yancey County Maintenance Yard.
