HermineOn Saturday morning, residents awoke in some areas of Bladen County to no power thanks to Tropical Storm Hermine.

Bladen County Emergency Management Director Bradley Kinlaw said other than the closure of Twisted Hickory Road due to flooding, the county received no major damage from the storm.

At the height of the storm, Kinlaw said there were about 30 trees downed and power outages reported throughout Bladen County due to downed power lines.

“I want to thank our law enforcement and fire fighters for getting the roadways back open as quickly as they did,” said Kinlaw. “We were blessed. This was a great opportunity to be prepared for the next one.”

As of 10 a.m., the Duke Energy outage map showed about 65 customers in Bladen County were still remaining without power. According to Duke Energy, crews are out assessing damage and beginning repairs from Florida into the Carolinas.

Four County Electric Membership Corporation’s outage map, shows no outages as of 10 a.m.

Twisted Hickory Road near Clarkton remains closed due to flooding south of Old Abbottsburg Road.

As the storm approached, Bladen County Schools dismissed early on Friday, giving parents an early start for their Labor Day weekend plans and forcing area high school football games to be played to Thursday night.

The annual Labor Day Sidewalk Sale in Elizabethtown kicked off on Friday with some stores placing items on the sidewalk underneath their awnings, while serious bargain hunters braved the rain in search of the perfect item. The Sidewalk Sale continues Saturday and Monday.
