U.S. 701 southbound traffic crossing the Cape Fear River bridge in Elizabethtown has been shifted back to the bridge because of pavement concerns in the newly paved median crossover on the north side of the river, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

District Engineer Kenneth Clark said that work is being done to strengthen the pavement to ensure no future problems. If all goes as planned, Clark said, southbound traffic could shift back onto the new bridge late Friday afternoon

“We wanted to go ahead and address the long-term durability of the crossover before we get into the peak of the summer tourist season starting next weekend,” Clark said.

Northbound traffic was redirected to the new bridge in late April.
