A West Bladen High School student died from injuries he sustained in a wreck on Butler Mill Road occurring on Sunday, March 10 at 1:50 p.m., according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol (NCHP). Charges have been filed against the underage driver according to the NCHP report.

Media reports on Monday, March 11 stated Aldo Hernandez, who was a junior at the school, passed away due to his injuries sustained in the crash. The school’s counselors have been working with students since the wreck according to the school’s reports.

Hernandez, 18, was a passenger in the vehicle driven by a 17-year old female, Bladenboro resident. Also in the vehicle was another teenaged female passenger.

The car had exited a curve on Butler Mill Road and ran off the road to the right, according to Sgt. B. Ezzell with the NCHP. The driver over corrected and the vehicle crossed the centerline and ran off the road to the right, struck a ditch and overturned.

Sgt. Ezzell said that Hernandez, who was a passenger in the front seat, was ejected from the vehicle.

A 17-year old passenger from Whiteville who was riding in the backseat was reported to have minor injuries, according to the Highway Patrol. The 17 year old driver has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle/reckless driving according to the NCHP report by NCHP Tropper G M White.

The first court hearing for the charges will be May 9, 2019 in Bladen County District Court.
