The United Way of Bladen County is gearing up for their 5th annual Day of Caring in Bladen County on Friday, Nov. 6, at 8 a.m. at the Cape Fear Famers Market in Elizabethtown.
Barbara Knight, a United Way representative, said that the Day of Caring is about giving back to the community. “We started this to raise awareness of the many needs of the residents of Bladen County and give the opportunity to give back to them,” said Knight. She said on Wednesday there are 82 volunteers currently pre-registered for the event, but pre-registration is not necessary. Anyone wishing to volunteer can come out to the farmers market and they will be placed with a group.

This year’s Day of Caring will include such activities as the construction of five wheelchair ramps, visiting the patients of Poplar Heights and Elizabethtown Nursing Center, and packing food bags to be given to the families of needy students in the county. Knights said folks who wish to help with the wheelchair ramps are asked to bring any hand tools they may have such as hammers or saws with them.
She said the group will also be collecting food and packing food bags at the farmers market from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m.

“The food will be packed into bags and disbursed to local schools. These backpacks may be the only food available to some of our students on the weekends,” said Knight.
Knight said volunteers will also be packing “goodie” bags for the patients of the nursing center.
Knight said that the fifth grade students of Elizabethtown Christian Academy will be going to Poplar Heights and the Elizabethtown Nursing Center to sing for the residents. They will be accompanied by ECA teachers David Vaught and Jane Clark.  “Volunteers for the nursing homes will assist in Bingo and board games activities, reading or just visiting with the residents,” Knight said. “These students have been doing this since they were in the first grade,” said Knight.
