To update our readers, the Bladen County Board of Elections did meet on Tuesday, November 12 for a regular scheduled meeting and discussed whether or not to display an American flag in their meeting room and the issue about reciting the pledge. The board decided to continue meeting without displaying the flag and without saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America.

However, the board did not bring the issue up for a formal vote during the most recent meeting, according to a board member. BladenOnline.com has requested copies of the videos from the Bladen County Board of Elections meetings.

At the Bladen County Board of Elections meeting held on Tuesday, August 13, Ms. Louella P. Thompson, chairman of the Bladen County Board Of Elections took questions from the  audience. She was asked why the board did not pledge allegiance to the flag before meetings. Then she had a follow-up question about having prayer before the meetings.

Ms. Thompson looked at fellow board member Ms. Patsy Sheppard and they both agreed there was no need for the pledge of Allegiance to the flag at the meetings. Someone pointed out there was not an American flag present. Ms. Thompson looked around the room and  suggested there was no room for a flag, even though there were empty seats and open spaces available in the room.

Ms. Thompson, did not call for the board to discuss the allegiance and flag matters, nor ask for a motion at the August meeting. However, she did state the importance of prayer and an invocation is said before each board meeting.

North Carolina Governor Roy Copper did appoint the board members refusing to display the flag and recite the pledge. If you would like to voice your concerns you may do so by attending the Bladen County Board of Elections meetings. There is an election canvass scheduled for today, Friday, November 15th at 11 a.m. at the local Board of Elections office.  However, you may also contact Governor Roy Copper.
